Director's Cut at Bushwick Film Festival

by LEO BROOKLYN

"Director's Cut" premiered at Bushwick Film Festival this past weekend.  Directed by Don Capria, it’s a campy, chilling, brutal horror-thriller about a sociopathic filmmaker who lures a desperate punk band into a bloody game of survival in a remote mansion hundreds of miles from home with the promise of a free music video. The film explores the desperate pursuit of fame and the lurking dangers that accompany it.

As the band signs up for what they believe is an opportunity for their big break, the tension builds. The music video director who goes by Mr. Director —portrayed by the legendary Louis Lombardy—pulls them into a twisted production with the help of Babs, a bodacious trans woman with big tits and tight pink pants that prominently display her package, played by Petit Mort veteran Lucy Hart.

“For the band to go out there and be so vulnerable—it’s a cautionary tale”, said director Don Capria during the question and answer panel after the film.  “Mr. Director represents the music business that takes advantage of kids who want fame. They have no idea who they’re getting in bed with.”

The casting for Director’s Cut is one of the film’s standout achievements. Their expressions of angst and frustration, especially in the scenes where the weight of the director’s manipulation begins to set in, are captivating. You can see the fire in their eyes as they struggle with the betrayal and their growing realization of the nightmare they’ve signed up for.

The chemistry among the bandmates is palpable from their very first scenes together, offering a convincing portrayal of a group that shares not just a love for music, but a deeper, familial bond. Their connection, trust, and love for one another shine through in quieter moments between the chaos, making their unraveling in the face of terror all the more heartbreaking.

Lucy Hart knocked it out of the park with her performance as Babs, who serves as Mr. Director’s unsettlingly calm and seductive accomplice, assisting with each brutal murder with a chilling sense of detachment.

Director’s Cut is so much fun - between the cinematography, character development, and soundtrack, Don Capria made a film that is a must see this Halloween for camp and horror enthusiasts!
